Call for new strategy against Lyme disease
NEW YORK, Jun 30 (Reuters) -- A more broad-based community program is
needed to protect Americans against becoming infected with Lyme disease,
according to a report from the American Lyme Disease Foundation (ALDF).
.
.
.
"There is no question that the disease is not only increasing in
incidence but is spreading geographically and poses an important public
health concern," according to the Foundation report, "Lyme Disease and
Other Tick-Born Infections: What Public and Other Health Professionals
Need to Know."
.
.
.
Improved surveillance by physicians and health departments would also
help to uncover more cases of Lyme disease, an important step in
obtaining accurate incidence rates of the disease. "Several studies
indicate that Lyme disease cases are underreported by five to ten
times," according to the report.

FOR LYME DISEASE VICTIMS, BATTLE IS FOR BETTER TREATMENT
.
.
.
Schmidt [Mark Schmidt, assistant director in the Illinois Department of
Public Health] said Lyme disease is greatly underreported in Illinois--
only 10 cases were recorded last year. For that reason Schmidt began the
state's Lyme Project last spring to increase understanding among the
public and health-care professionals.
