Fact: This statement is misleading for several reasons. First, 'early Lyme disease' often goes undetected due to lack of awareness of a tick bite and absence of an EM rash [30] . Second, recent studies have shown that tick saliva carries immunosuppressive substances that allow tickborne agents to invade tissues while paralyzing the local immune response [31, 32] . Thus the Lyme disease spirochete may rapidly disseminate and become entrenched and resistant early in the disease (see below) [33-35] .
