![]() Lyme disease has been confirmed in a Lambton County resident, prompting health officials there to remind the public to protect against ticks. The disease -- caused by the bite of a deer tick carrying Lyme disease bacteria -- typically results in a bull's-eye rash that usually appears within 10 days. Some infected people experience flu-like symptoms, but more advanced cases can include heart and brain problems, officials with the Lambton County community health services department said. Antibiotics can usually treat the disease when it's detected early, but protecting against ticks is also a good defence, officials said. Some tips on avoiding ticks: - Stay away from tall grass, bushes and wooded areas where ticks live. - Wear long pants and sleeves, socks, shoes and hats. - Use insect repellent. - Put a tick or flee collar on pets. If you find a tick, officials recommend using tweezers to grasp the head and pull it out. Squeezing or burning the tick isn't advisable. Anyone with symptoms of Lyme disease should contact a doctor.
