The below photos are of a rash acquired by a guy who then took it upon himself to get a microscope and have a look.
The microscope images appear to be spirochetal but are inconclusive at this point in time. There may be cyst structures or more than one species.
The rashes were at 2 months of gradual expansion when the photos were taken, and now are mostly healed. If you look at the rash on the bottom of the photo of several smaller rashes you will see a dark spot in the center. The sample was taken from the the place where the dark center once was. At the time the sample was obtained all that remained of that rash was a small itchy red bump where the black center once was.
The smears were stained with Hemal stain (similar to Giemsa, used for blood work) ), and viewed a 100x phase contrast oil immersion objective. (Total magnification would be about 2000x with the eyepiece camera.)
