W. Reuben Kaufman Ph.D, (Edmonton, AB)
Professor of Zoology, University of Alberta. His area of research expertise since the early 1970s is the physiology, pharmacology and endocrinology of ixodid ticks, the family that includes vectors of B. burgdorferi.
Dr. Redwan Moqbel, PhD, FRCPath. (Winnipeg, MB)
Professor and Head, Dept of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB. I am an Adjunct Professor at the Dept. of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB.
Janet Sperling, M.Sc. (Edmonton, Alberta)
Janet's oldest son contracted Lyme disease in his mid teens, which led to two years of navigating the complexities of the diagnosis and effective treatment of Lyme borreliosis during his illness. The unresolved nature of this experience persuaded Janet to contribute substantively to the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation. Her 1988 M.Sc. in Entomology (on the physiology and feeding behavior of beetles) gave her a background for understanding the biological diversity and diagnostic complexity of arthropod-vectored illnesses. She is the senior author of a review paper on Lyme disease in press in The Canadian Entomologist.
Rossana Magnotta (Toronto, ON)
President and CEO of Magnotta Winery and a driving force in raising
awareness for Lyme disease in Canada. She knows first-hand how
frustrating, exhaustive and life-changing Lyme disease can become
because of her own family's experience with the disease. With her
educational background in medical laboratory science, her vast
philanthropic activities over the years have focused on healthcare and
helping the needy. She has sat on many boards including hospitals and is
now exclusively devoted to advancing Lyme disease awareness and research
through fundraising events at her winery, public speaking and working
closely with CanLyme to help build its research and testing facility.
David Cubberley, (Vancouver Island, BC)
David Cubberley is a former Saanich Councillor and provincial MLA who began speaking out on Lyme disease while serving as Opposition Health Critic.
Larry Burke, B., Des. MGDC (Halifax, NS)
Larry's wife contracted Lyme disease in Nova Scotia in 1999. Larry is currently active as the Nova Scotia representative of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation. Mr. Burke has served on the communications board of the Grace Maternity Hospital Foundation
Robert W. Manten, P.Eng., QEP, (Waterdown, ON)
A professional engineer by vocation, he became a victim of Lyme disease in 2004. While his treatment for Chronic Lyme disease is on-going, he is an advocate for Lyme patients and improved Chronic Lyme disease public policy.
Linda Laidlaw, Ph.D., (Edmonton, AB)
Dr. Linda Laidlaw is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. Her research is in the area of literacy, curriculum, diversity, and complexity theory. Recently, she has developed an interest in the cognitive implications of chronic Lyme disease, and how parents and schools can best address those issues, based on her experiences with her daughter’s illness.
In 2007, her young daughter developed severe cognitive and neurological symptoms that remained undiagnosed for a year, until she was tested through IgeneX and travelled to the US where she was diagnosed with neurological Lyme disease and babesiosis duncani. Xian Laidlaw has made a miraculous recovery to date and her response to treatment for tick borne illnesses has also had the effect of shifting some of her doctors’ perspectives in regards to acknowledgment and treatment of Lyme disease.
Robert Doucet, (Hampton, NB)
Robert is a land surveyor whose health started to decline in 2003. It turned out to be Lyme disease but the diagnosis was not easily acquired. He has educated himself on many aspects of Lyme disease. Mr. Doucet is an active spokesperson in New Brunswick having given several talks to various groups, and had many media interviews. He was also asked to sit on a board for the city of St. John, New Brunswick for the Milladgeville area. That year milledgeville had many issues with kids contracting Lyme Disease. They did a study/tick sweep in certain areas of Milledgeville and 1 1/2 years ago it was declared an endemic area. He works closely with the health authorities.
Jim Wilson A.I.I.C., (Westbank, BC)
President and founder of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, victim of lyme, father of victims of lyme. He has been involved in networking with Lyme victims and providing information for over 10 years. His background in the investigation of medical malpractice and legal liability matters has given him insight into medical research from a perspective of conflict of evidence.
