Reinforcements bolster LU blue line
By Reuben Villagracia
Sep 30, 2005
Steve Rawski is thankful there are more warm bodies on his side of the rink these days.
The Lakehead Thunderwolves’ defensive corps, rattled by injury last winter, is now a nine-man crew fighting for minutes as the university hockey preseason continues this weekend.
“Last year we had a few injuries and finished the year with only five defencemen,” said Rawski, entering his third campaign in Thunder Bay. “Three new guys and (a returning) Mike (Jacobsen) is an added bonus.”
LU coach Pete Belliveau vowed never to be shorthanded at that position again and chose to recruit with an emphasis on defence.
Joining returnees Rawski, Jacobsen, Erik Lodge, Mike Self, Drew Kivell and Hugo Lehoux are Jeff Whitfield, Matt Jacques and Daniel Rogers.
Kris Callaway remains a regular on the injured list. The North Delta, B.C. product missed the entire 2004-2005 season due to what the team called “fatigue symptoms.” This summer Callaway was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease. His return is still unknown, said Belliveau.
Jacobsen, who was recently cleared to play after being on academic probation, should see plenty of minutes in his return as the Thunderwolves (2-0-0) open a two-game exhibition series against the Saint Mary’s Huskies at Fort William Gardens tonight.
The Huskies were tied for third in the Atlantic conference last year before losing in the semifinals to Moncton. Saint Mary’s forward Ryan Lauzon returns as the conference’s eighth-leading scorer.
Lakehead goalie Chris Whitley is expected to get his first start tonight. Belliveau kept fifth-year senior Grant McCune in net for both wins here against Manitoba last week.
“We’re going to probably let them both play and get some minutes,” Belliveau said. “We’re comfortable with both of them.”
These games are another step in a four-week preseason with few easy opponents. Next week the Thunderwolves travel to the United States for games against the reigning national champion University of Denver, Colorado College — half the field at last year’s Frozen Four — and Air Force.
“I think Pete’s got us in some really tough games early on,” Rawski said. “Playing them gives us a chance to see where they’re at and where we’re at.”
Lakehead opens the OUA regular season at home on Oct. 21 against the Windsor Lancers.
