Alzheimer's disease--a spirochetosis?

Judit Miklossy

University Institute of Pathology, Division of Neuropathology,
University of Lausanne, Rue du Bugnon 27, 1005 Lausanne, Switzerland

The aetiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which affects a large proportion of the aged population is unknown and the treatment unresolved. The role of beta amyloid protein (ßA4), derived from a larger amyloid precursor protein (APP) in AD is the subject of intense research. Here I report observations that in 14 autopsy cases, with histopathologically confirmed AD, spirochetes were found in blood and cerebrospinal fluid and, moreover, could be isolated from brain tissue. Thirteen age-matched control cases were without spirochetes. Reference strains of spirochetes and those isolated from brains of AD patients, showed positive immunoreaction with monoclonal antibody against the ß amyloid precursor protein. These observations suggest that spirochetes may be one of the causes of AD and that they may be the source of the ß amyloid deposited in the AD brain.

Dr. Derrick DeSilva did one of the most compelling case studies on a man who having been placed in a nursing home with the diagnosis of Alzheimers, incontinent and incoherent, was turned around with a couple of months of IV rocephin. Slides were shown before and after. Before he was diagnosed properly, he was sitting, slumped in a chair in a nursing home. The next slide revealed him with his arm around his wife, golf shorts on and ready to play 18 holes.

Interestingly enough I've had a case right here at home.
A Patient with history of mulitiple diseases( the usual cardiac &diabetes). The pt was in her 80's and was also showing signs of early Alzheimers or Dementia.
She began to decline, complaining of multiple problems without much MD response. Knowing the pt well I began to correlate her symptoms with my own. We had bad brain days together and such. Well considering she's in a Lyme endemic area and was an avid gardener I pushed the MD for a Lyme test which was refused (after all I'm a crazy nurse who has Lyme & see's it everywhere).
I then mentioned my theory to the family who after a time did demand a test to find out the pt was positive. Pt received treatment and rerurned to an increased active lifestyle and was able to remain independent at home.
Doctors & nurses have to remember not to write off the elderly.I fear for the elderly population who present with symptoms like falling down alot and fatigue because if we're told things like "your getting older" imagine the things they hear from their physicians. They usually have multiple medical problems so their symptoms are easily written off to other things. Remember your best advocate is yourself or your family!!!! This one case was dumb luck that I got sick and Lyme literate at the same time I had this pt. Oh the MD did apologize to me after said she should have listened to my suggestion-hind sight is everything!!!!
