B.C. announces $2 million to study fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue
The Canadian Press
Wed, 30 Mar 2011 14:04:00 CST
VANCOUVER - The B.C. government is earmarking $2 million for a clinical and research study of a variety of complex chronic diseases.
The study will focus on screening, diagnosing and treating patients with fibromyalgia, Lyme disease and chronic fatigue syndrome.
A statement from the provincial Health Ministry says the goal is to accurately diagnose the conditions, and provide treatment or ongoing symptom management.
At the moment, the cause of these debilitating illnesses is unknown, though doctors suspect an infectious agent may be the root.
The Health Ministry says recent breakthroughs in DNA sequencing and computer analysis mean doctors may soon have some answers about these conditions.
The study is expected to be up and running by the fall
